The Challenge:
Western Railways was seeking an Integrated Voice, Video and Data Services Solution to link their rail stations.
The Client:
Western Railways is a unit of the Indian Railways which is one of the largest Railways in the world. It serves the entire area of Gujarat, part of Rajasthan and some portion of Madhya Pradesh. Today, of the 14 million people travelling each day by the Indian Railways, more than 6 million people travel per day on Mumbai Suburban section alone. Of the 2100+ services run in Mumbai 1007 services which includes 409 twelve car services are run by Western Railways. Western Railways carries approx. 3 million passengers per day.
Western Railways is a pioneer in implementing the state of art 'Train Management System' (TMS) over its suburban section until Virar. The TMS gives real time in formation of train movement to commuters. The actual count down of trains expected in minutes is displayed at the stations with automatic announcements.
Client Requirement:
To provide an SDH based solution connecting five stations over a protected fiber ring with the requirement of multiple add/drop of E1s for their Voice, Video and Data Services in their Telephony, Signaling,
Traffic Control and Alarms, Ticketing and Intra-station communication.
Summary of the Ordyn Solution:
Ordyn Technologies provided an SDH based solution connecting five stations over a protected fiber ring with the requirement of multiple add/drops of E1s for Voice, Video and Data Services in Western Railways’ Telephony, Signaling, Traffic Control and Alarms, Ticketing and Intra-station communication. The Ordyn-1203 was chosen to provide a cost-effective solution to cater to the future demands of the Railway network and the expected increase in traffic, applications and services. The OrdynView 200 NMS was provisioned at the service provider premises to include the management of services provided to Texas Instruments.
Details of the Solution:
Ordyn proposed to build a protected fiber ring by positioning the Ordyn-1203 STM-1 SDH Synchronous Multiplexer at stations along the Western Railway route. The OrdynView 200 NMS was provisioned at Borivalli to manage the various services provided along the rail route.
All 7 stations of the Western Railway communicate over STM-1 SDH rings to pass voice, data and clock signals. Ordyn’s 1203 provided access to the SDH network. Borivalli was installed with one Ordyn 1203 STM-1 where it was configured for 21 E1s with one E1 card which allowed for a later upgrade. 5E1s were dropped at Mira Road, 4 at Bayandher, 4 Naigaon, 4 at Basai road, 3 at Nalasupara and 3 at Virar with each station provisioned with one E1 card in its Ordyn-1203. The NMS was provisioned at Borivalli station to centrally manage the various network management services like provisioning, configuration, fault and performance management, security for the services offered to various stations in the Western Rail route.

Customer Benefits:
- The solution is based on the Ordyn’s state-of-the-art SDH Multiplexers (Ordyn-1203) which are cost-effective, reliable, easily deployed, flexible and scalable and provides seamless upgrade solutions for the demand of higher capacity and services.
- The solution provides an integration of voice and data services, modular provisioning in the multiplexer to provide for additional E1s and Ethernet services that customers may demand later.
- The solution offers an efficient transmission of voice, video, LAN, data and timing signals between trains and rail stations.
- The system makes extensive use of redundancy to ensure that all communications arrive at their destinations.
- The Solution reduces maintenance and provides multiple services from a single integrated system and keeps maximum uptime and reliability resulting from built-in redundancy.
- The uniqueness of the Ordyn 1203 in this solution is in providing the physical connectivity for E1’s output using wire-wrapping (similar to in-built DDF) which adds to reliability of the connectivity.
